Mija Making Moves: El Paso Grad Overcomes SAT Mishap, Earns Dual Scholarships at La Salle University

One El Paso Mija is proving that despite obstacles that are sometimes beyond our control, you can still achieve the goals you want to achieve in life.

Last November Zyenna Martinez, an El Paso High School Senior, was notified that her SAT scores were one of the dozen scantrons that were lost after they flew out of a UPS truck.

The school district had recovered all, but  55 score sheets. Since then the school district of El Paso and the college board had decided to waive and allow students to retake the exam on December 10, 2022.

After the incident, Zeyenna appeared on the Tamron Hall show to talk about the incident. She mentioned that she was worried about this preventing her from getting into the college of her dreams, La Salle University.

Fast forward to June 13, 2023, Zeyenna was invited back on the show, and during her interview she mentioned that she would be attending her number one college choice, La Salle University on TWO scholarships.

“I applied to the Christian Brothers scholarship, I thought I wasn’t going to get it because it says that it has many requirements that I may not meet. I got a call and I received full-tuition scholarships for four years,” said Zeyenne. “Not only will I receive a full scholarship for all four years, I will also be going with an athletic scholarship because I am a swimmer.”

During the show, Tamron has asked Zyennas mom if she was nervous since she went from having the feeling of uncertainty to finally seeing her child going to the university of her dreams.

Zyennas mother responded with, “As a parent you never stop being nervous and you’re trying to do everything so that they could have this opportunity. How can a parent not work just as hard when she puts the effort in?”

To top it all off, Tamron mentioned that Zyenna will also have a dorm  stylist to decorate her dorm and  she will also be receiving a whole year of access to e-books with Pearson Plus.

Despite this challenge and the lingering feeling of uncertainty, this Mija was able to overcome this obstacle and will now be attending the university of her dreams.
