Mija, Yes you can.™
On March 8, 2020, International Women’s Day, our founder Iris Lopez launched a project that she had held in for months because she wasn’t sure if this “silly little project” would amount to anything. That’s when she heard her mom’s voice calmly telling her, “Mija, Yes you can,” and it was then that the Mija project was created!
When you search for the definition of the Spanish word, Mija, you’ll get this explanation: “Mija is an informal word for “Mi hija”, my daughter. While it is used by parents to address their daughters, in Mexico it is a term of endearment. The word Mija is a simple but powerful word that has the ability to encourage young women to become mighty and strong.
“Mija, Yes you can” is a project aimed at telling the stories of women of all ages who have achieved great things through obstacles big or small, because you never truly realize how much you can relate to others until you share your story with the world.
There’s a reason our phrase is in both Spanish and English. The phrase is meant to reach ALL women of ALL races and ethnicities. We are proud of our Mexican culture and invite others to join us in this movement that includes ALL women.
Your shirt purchase is helping us fund our dream of one day becoming a non-profit organization that can provide scholarships for young women as well as older women who had to put their college education on hold but want to continue pursuing their dreams.
The creators of this project are YOU! Women, young and old, who have a story to tell. You never truly realize how much you can relate to others until you share your story with the world.
Whether you’re a local public figure, a young aspiring professional, a single mom working her way through college or a young girl who wants to make a positive impact in our community, we want to tell your story so others can relate and know that they’re not alone. It’s women supporting other women through relatable stories.
Send us a message with a story of how you overcame something difficult in your life and together we can spread positivity with one simple phrase, “Mija, Yes you can.”
