Mijas Making Moves: El Paso Mom’s Unique Business ‘Son Teach Me’ Born from Love for Her Son.

El Pasoan Martha Reyes is a first-time mom and a proud entrepreneur. Her son is the inspiration behind her latest business venture, ‘Son Teach Me.’

“It is a children’s play center for babies who are infants to 6 years of age,” said Martha. “The center pays what you can so it doesn’t matter if you bring in 5 children, 6 children. I have a lot of families that bring in their grandparents to come in to watch the little ones.”

The origin of the name ‘Son Teach Me’ originated from her being a first-time mom.

“I  got pregnant during COVID and I was scared when everything was shut down,” said Martha. “So, when I had my son I was terrified to have anyone come near us, however, my son taught me to become the woman I needed to be and the mother my son needed me to be.”

When Martha began this business she was told that it wouldn’t be a great idea, however, she had received great reviews and feedback.

“When I began with the idea many people were telling me that it’s not gonna work and it’s been the complete opposite El Paso has been a great support,” said Martha.

Martha mentioned that she has a couple of rules within the facility which is, that parents have to always remain with their child and cannot be on their phone to browse on social media.

The reason she created this rule was to allow parents the chance to bond with their children without any distractions, and the response from parents in regards to this rule has been a positive one.

“Children will play with the parents in a kitchen and the parents will sit out of the kitchen window and tell their children I would like an ice cream and the kids will bring it to them and it’s very interactive. Parents stay with their kiddos and keep an eye on them,” said Martha.

As her business begins to grow, so do her concerns about funding. Martha hopes that when she gets a hold of sufficient funding she can begin to have classes and activities for the children. She also hopes to hire more employees.

With each appointment, Martha states that when big or small families use her facility they pay with however much they can to her with her cash app. With these funds, she hopes to one day get a building and she knows that the children need it the most.

One piece of advice Martha would like to give to other Mijas who one day want to open up their own business is,

“Do it! I have had a lot of people tell me so many things, and I completely understand since it was a new idea and a new business model here in El Paso. I am a woman, I am young, I am a mom,” said Martha. “It’s never too late to start your business, there are ways to get grants and funding. I’m not a non-profit, I am a for-profit business and I have gotten great feedback even though there have been people who have had concerns with this. Just do it and don’t let other people tell you otherwise.”
